Speaking to The Sun, Caroline opened up about George, Charlotte, and Louis’ bedtime routine, which she has described as being “beautifully ordinary”.
Caroline explained that bedtime wasn’t just a time for the royal children to sleep; it was a time for them to wind down too.
It’s also when you see how grounded they really are; polite, playful, and full of personality.
“You get to know them in those quiet evening hours. That’s when they’re most relaxed. And it’s also when you see how grounded they really are; polite, playful, and full of personality,” she said.
Caroline then went on to reveal that despite being royalty, the children were very “down to earth”.
“We always kept to a familiar structure of a warm bath, quiet play, stories, and then bed. It was designed to help them unwind slowly. The routine was the same, no matter what had gone on in the day,” she explained.

Bath time in the Wales household
Caroline then went on to reveal that bathtime was a non-negotiable part of the bedtime routine for the kids.
The former royal nanny then went on to say how the children’s nighttime skincare routines were very natural. They would consist of some warm water, a soft cloth, and a “plant-based” wash.
Caroline also recalled that after bathtime, the kids would do their own things. George enjoyed playing with his building blocks after a bath, whilst Charlotte enjoyed reading quietly. Meanwhile, Louis would cuddle up to a soft toy.
The former nanny added that there was “no screen time” in the evenings for the children. This was as the focus was for them to “wind down”.

Caroline then revealed that an hour before lights out, the children would get a warm glass of milk, with either a banana or half a plain rice cake.
The warm milk wasn’t just a nice treat for the royal children – it actually helps them sleep.
As proven by science, drinking warm milk encourages the body to produce melatonin. This is the body’s natural sleep hormone.
Not only does it help you sleep, but it also enhances REM sleep.
Reflecting on her time as a nanny for the royals, Caroline declared bedtime one of her highlights.
“There were cuddles, books, the occasional giggle fit. It was beautifully ordinary. People imagine strict formality, but the truth is, it was warm, loving, and very normal,” she said.
What is a royal nanny called?
A royal nanny is often referred to as a Norland Nanny. This term specifically refers to nannies who have completed their training at Norland College, a prestigious institution. Norland Nannies are particularly sought after by royal and wealthy families.
How much do royal nannies get paid?
Royal nannies could reportedly earn upwards of £120,000 per year, depending on their experience (and who they are nannying).
